Girl's Invitational Basketball Tournament
The 1996
Rotary Basketball Invitational was the Brentwood Rotary Club's
third and final annual holiday tournament for girls high school
basketball. While this project was extremely successful and
was greatly appreciated by the community, the players and the
schools participating, the club determined that other projects
would provide a greater return and thus a greater service to
our community. However, here is some background on the torunament.
Even before
the first basketball swished through the net in December 1994,
it was obvious the Rotary Basketball Invitational would be a
success. The 1994 tournament saw eight outstanding Tennessee
teams squaring off in front of a gym full of fans. More than
20 college recruiters were also in the stands, to get a first-hand
look at potential prospects. Hickman County, captured the championship
trophy in both 1994 and 1995 and in 1996, the Moore County Raiderettes
won the championship game 64-53 over Bradley Central.
The Rotary Club of Brentwood began this tournament to give something
back to the Brentwood community. While the championship game determined
the winning team, this was an event in which everyone was a winner.
Each participant benefited from the experience. Each school represented
found this tournament to be an asset to their athletic program.
The tournament created a wholesome, family atmosphere for holiday
enjoyment for fans and supporters. But, most of all the community
was the big winner. Proceeds from the Brentwood Rotary Invitational
were distributed to worthy projects designed to assist both young
and old throughout the community.
The following trophies and plaques were awarded:
-
Plaques to all participating teams
-
Trophies to all members of the 1st and 2nd place finishers
-
10 trophies to the all tournament team
-

The tournament
awards selection committee had the difficult task of selecting
the 10 girls for the All-Tournament team, as well as the young
woman that stood out as the Most Valuable Player. Qualities
such as poise and performance under pressure, leadership, team
play and sportsmanship were among the selection criteria along
with team and individual statistics.
BANQUET
The Tipoff Banquet began the tournament. This was a special dinner
reserved for coaches, team members and invited local dignitaries
only. Each coach was asked to introduce each of his/her players
for a total of three minutes. The Banquet was a great start to
a great tournament.
The Rotary
Club solicited donations from business in the community in order
to cover the cost of the tournament. In this way revenue from
ticket sales and advertising revenues from ads in the Tournament
Program could go back into the community. The success of this
fundraising effort determined the overall benefit the Club could
eventually provide for the community. Donations were solicited
for hotel rooms, food and cash. Sponsors were recognized formally
in the program and during the tournament.
Tickets
for the tournament were $5/day or $12/tournament for adults and
$3/day or $6/tournament for students and seniors. A $1 discount
was given to those who bought tickets in advance
